City awards pre-construction contract for Newton Community Centre
Surrey City Council approved the award of a pre-construction and design services contract for the Newton Community Centre, a major new facility that will serve as a vibrant, inclusive community hub in the heart of Newton.
“The Newton Community Centre is the largest capital project investment in the City’s history,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “With recreation, culture and library services under one roof, we’re creating a welcoming space that reflects the diversity and needs of the neighbourhood and broader community.”
Following a competitive process that included three shortlisted design-build teams, Ventana Construction Corp. was selected based on experience, technical approach and financial considerations. The progressive design-build pre-construction services contract is valued at $9.1 million. Once completed, the 175,000-square-foot facility will include a 50-metre lap pool, leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, two gymnasiums, fitness center, multi-purpose and arts spaces, child-care areas and a new 40,000-square-foot library, more than double the size of the existing Newton branch.
Located on the east side of King George Boulevard, next to the Newton Seniors Centre, the $310.6-million project supports the city’s long-term vision for a revitalized Newton town center and is expected to open in spring 2030.
