Canada pledges $8M for repairs to Chornobyl nuclear site after reported drone damage

Canada is contributing $8 million toward repairs at Ukraine’s Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant following damage to a key containment structure earlier this year.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced the funding, which will support critical work on the facility’s New Safe Confinement structure after it was damaged in a reported Russian drone strike on Feb. 14, 2025.

The site remains a symbol of the Chernobyl disaster, the world’s worst nuclear accident, and officials say the latest damage highlights ongoing risks to nuclear safety amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Ottawa condemned what it described as continued attacks on civilian and nuclear infrastructure, reaffirming Canada’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The federal government says the funding will go toward stabilizing and repairing the protective structure that contains radioactive material at the site. The work will be carried out in co-ordination with international partners, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Canada has contributed more than $116 million to Chornobyl-related remediation and nuclear safety efforts since the 1990s, much of it through multilateral programs led by the G7 and international financial institutions.

Officials say global partners are working to secure funding for broader repairs to the structure, with preliminary estimates placing total costs at more than $900 million and a target completion date of 2030.

The government says it will continue working with allies to support nuclear safety, protect civilians and hold Russia accountable for its actions.
