MP Amritpal Singh formally arrested in Ajnala violence case, remanded to police custody
Police in Punjab have formally arrested Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh in connection with the Ajnala violence case, following the expiry of his National Security Act detention period.
The Punjab Police confirmed that Singh, who also leads the “Waris Punjab De” organisation, was produced before a sub-divisional court in Ajnala via video conference from Assam’s Dibrugarh jail.
Authorities say Singh has been in custody at the Dibrugarh facility since April 23, 2023, while several of his associates are already facing trial in Punjab prisons.
Police sought a 15-day remand to further investigate alleged arms recoveries, vehicle seizures, and the purported formation of a group called “Anandpur Khalsa Force.” However, after hearing arguments from the defence, the court granted a two-day police remand.
Defence lawyers argued the case is already at the trial stage, with witness testimony underway, and questioned the timing of new investigative claims, including references to vehicles that had not been previously cited.
The Punjab government had earlier requested that Singh remain in Dibrugarh jail due to law and order concerns, with proceedings conducted through video conferencing. The Punjab and Haryana High Court accepted the request, allowing virtual court appearances instead of physical transfer.
Officials say Singh will remain in Dibrugarh during the remand period, where police will continue questioning him.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Saturday.
