Punjab Police seeks ban on web series “Lawrence of Punjab” ahead of release

Punjab Police has written to India’s central government seeking a ban on the upcoming web series Lawrence of Punjab, citing concerns over law and order and its potential impact on public order in the state.

According to officials, a senior cybercrime officer has urged the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to block the series on OTT platforms, including ZEE5, ahead of its scheduled release on April 27.

Police say the series is expected to portray the life of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, including references to major criminal cases such as the killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala.

In its letter, the cybercrime wing says the content allegedly depicts the rise of Bishnoi from a student leader to a prominent figure in organized crime, and expresses concern that it may glorify criminal activity.

Officials warn that public reaction to the series could trigger unrest and potentially affect law and order in Punjab. The police also argue that the portrayal of violent crimes could negatively influence young viewers.

The request cites provisions of India’s Information Technology Act, 2000, specifically Section 69A, which allows the government to block online content in certain circumstances.

The move follows growing opposition to the series, including a public interest petition filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking intervention to stop its release.
