Advocates urge reporting of intimate partner violence during awareness week

Advocates are calling for more awareness and reporting of intimate partner violence as British Columbia marks Prevention of Violence Against Women Week.

Data from Women and Gender Equality Canada suggests millions of people across the country have experienced intimate partner violence, much of it going unreported.

Statistics also show that each year an average of more than 100 women and girls in Canada are killed in gender-related violence, with the majority of cases involving male intimate partners or family members.

Premier David Eby has described the issue as a “national epidemic,” and has directed government ministries to expand supports for survivors, including transition housing and more responsive justice services.

Advocates say the violence is often hidden, with victims reluctant to come forward due to fear or stigma.

Linda Annis, executive director of Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers, said anonymous reporting can be a critical tool for helping victims.

“Reporting domestic violence anonymously is something you can do for someone who might not do it for themselves,” she said, noting the organization receives dozens of tips each year but believes many more cases go unreported.

Police agencies, including the Vancouver Police Department and Surrey Police Service, say resources are available to help victims safely report abuse and access support services.

Officials are encouraging anyone who suspects abuse to contact police or provide anonymous information through Crime Stoppers, emphasizing that early reporting can help prevent further harm.
