Punjab Congress chief opposes TV series on gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, calls for ban
Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has raised strong objections to a proposed television series reportedly based on jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, warning it could negatively influence young people and glorify crime.
In a statement, Warring criticized the series, titled “Lawrence of Punjab,” arguing that portraying a figure like Bishnoi risks promoting criminal culture rather than condemning it.
He also objected to the show’s title, saying it links Punjab’s identity — often associated with its spiritual and cultural heritage — to a violent criminal figure.
Warring pointed to Bishnoi’s alleged involvement in serious crimes, including the killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, and said individuals accused of such acts should not be turned into subjects of entertainment.
“This is not art or entertainment, but an act that could provoke and encourage youth toward crime,” Warring said.
The provincial Congress leader has called for a complete ban on the series and demanded accountability from both state and federal governments for allowing the project to move forward.
He also said he is considering filing a public interest litigation petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court to block the show’s release, citing concerns about its potential harmful impact on youth.
Warring further questioned the association of Bishnoi with Punjab, noting the gangster is originally from Rajasthan and is currently lodged in Sabarmati jail in Gujarat.
The controversy comes amid ongoing concerns in India about the influence of crime-based media on public perception and youth behaviour.
