Two Nova Scotia men charged after crossbow shooting in Moncton

Two Nova Scotia men are facing charges, including attempted murder, after a man was seriously injured in a crossbow shooting early Friday in Moncton, N.B.

Members of the Codiac Regional RCMP responded to a report of a shooting at about 3:45 a.m. on April 17. Police say a man was found with what are believed to be life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.

As officers arrived, three suspects fled the scene in a pickup truck, prompting a police pursuit. The vehicle headed toward Memramcook before being stopped near a wooded area after officers deployed a tire deflation device.

Police say the driver, a 39-year-old man from Nova Scotia, was arrested at the scene, while two other suspects fled on foot. RCMP Police Dog Services tracked and arrested a second suspect, a 38-year-old man from Nova Scotia, a short time later.

A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of a crossbow.

Allistair Hemphill, 39, appeared in Moncton provincial court later that day and faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, flight from police, driving while prohibited and failure to comply with a probation order.

Christopher Mackay, 38, has also been charged with attempted murder.

RCMP say a police operation was carried out later April 17 along Route 106 between Dieppe and Memramcook as part of the investigation. The operation involved multiple specialized units, including RCMP Air Services, the Emergency Response Team and a drone operator.

Both men returned to court on April 21 and were remanded in custody. Hemphill is scheduled to appear in court again on April 30, while Mackay is set to return on May 5.
