Surrey to flag two properties over unpermitted construction
Surrey city council has directed staff to register notices on title for two residential properties where significant construction was carried out without the required permits.
The decision was made Monday as part of what Mayor Brenda Locke described as a “zero-tolerance approach” to illegal building.
“We’re holding to our commitment to a zero-tolerance approach when it comes to illegal construction,” Locke said in a statement. “The City will continue to prioritize residents’ safety and require property owners to comply with regulations. This helps maintain consistent standards across neighbourhoods and ensures the integrity of the City’s building process.”
According to the city, extensive additions and alterations were completed at both properties.
At a home on 12464 77A Ave., work included a two-storey rear addition containing two dwelling units, a two-storey addition on the west side of the house, a garage addition with a dwelling unit, and a front deck.
At a property on 13466 87A Ave., officials identified two additions that include dwelling units, multiple units in the basement, two decks, and an accessory building containing a dwelling unit.
The city says the notices will be filed under Section 57 of the Community Charter, a legal mechanism used to inform prospective buyers and the public that unauthorized construction has taken place without proper permits or inspections.
Municipal officials say the measure is intended to ensure transparency and encourage compliance with building regulations while addressing potential safety concerns.
