Suspect Arrested After Purse-Snatching Incident in Vancouver

A 41-year-old man has been arrested and charged following an alleged purse-snatching that left a senior woman injured in Vancouver’s west side.

The incident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on Wednesday near West 8th Avenue and Spruce Street. Police say a 59-year-old woman, who was using a walker at the time, had her purse forcibly taken by a man. The victim fell to the ground during the incident and sustained minor injuries.

A passing driver who witnessed the incident immediately stopped and pursued the suspect on foot. During the chase, the suspect allegedly threatened the witness with a knife before dropping the stolen purse and fleeing the area.

The witness returned the purse to the victim and provided police with a detailed description of the suspect.

According to Constable Megan Lui, officers were able to locate and arrest the suspect shortly afterward near the Vancouver Seawall.

“We commend this Good Samaritan for assisting the victim, and are thankful there were no further injuries,” said Lui.

Brandon Cormack, 41, has been charged with one count of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.
