Three Indian-Origin Men Killed in Canada Within a Week; Concerns Over Possible Hate Crimes
Recent media reports indicate that three men of Indian origin have lost their lives in separate incidents across Canada over the past seven days, raising concerns among friends and community members about the possibility of racially motivated attacks.
Birinder Singh
In one case, 22-year-old Birinder Singh, a resident of Edmonton, was fatally shot on March 14 while driving south of Leduc on Highway 2. According to reports, Singh was traveling with friends toward the mountains via the QEII Highway when a pickup truck pulled up beside their Honda Civic. A gunshot was fired, killing Singh instantly.
A friend of the victim told media outlets that everything happened within seconds. The group had no prior interaction with the افراد in the truck, leaving them questioning whether race may have been a factor. Community members have also expressed concern over increasing hostility toward South Asians in the region.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that a firearm was discharged at the vehicle, resulting in the driver’s death. The Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation and is working to determine the motive.
Gurkeerat Singh Manocha
In a separate incident in British Columbia, 25-year-old international student Gurkeerat Singh Manocha died following a violent altercation near the Charlie Lake boat ramp outside Fort St. John late Friday night.
Police responded to the scene around 11:10 p.m. and found Manocha critically injured. Despite emergency efforts, he could not be saved. Originally from Ujjain, India, Manocha had come to Canada to pursue a degree in Business Management.
The North District Major Crimes Unit is currently investigating the case.
Davinder Singh
In Saskatchewan, 31-year-old Davinder Singh, originally from Moga, Punjab, was killed on March 13 while working as a driver for Crown Cab. He had responded to a call from the Hitching Post Motel, which turned out to be his final trip.
RCMP officers arrived at the scene following reports of an injured person and found Singh unconscious in the parking lot. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Two 19-year-old suspects, Kojak Adams and Garren Baptiste, have been charged in connection with Singh’s murder and remain in custody until March 30.
