Postmortem Report Says Ranjit Singh Died of Gunshot; Family Questions Police Version
The postmortem report of Ranjit Singh, who was killed in an alleged police encounter, has revealed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound. However, his family had earlier claimed that he died due to custodial torture.
Despite the report favouring the police version, the family has expressed dissatisfaction and said they will comment only after reviewing the videography of the postmortem examination.
Ranjit Singh’s uncle, Harvinder Singh Mallhi, has maintained from the beginning that the youth died during interrogation while in police custody.
According to officials, the postmortem was conducted on March 3 in the presence of Chief Judicial Magistrate Surekha Dadwal. The court had also sought CCTV footage from cameras installed near the encounter site in Puranashala, located about 25 kilometres from the spot where the police jeep had reportedly overturned.
Police had earlier claimed that Ranjit Singh managed to escape after the police vehicle carrying him for recovery of weapons overturned. They alleged that he later obtained a motorcycle and a pistol and fired at CIA in-charge Gurmeet Singh during the encounter.
However, the police have remained silent on how Ranjit Singh, who was reportedly handcuffed, managed to obtain both a motorcycle and a pistol.
The postmortem was conducted by doctors from Government Medical College Amritsar, including Dr. Sukhdeep Singh (Medical Officer), Dr. Satinder Pal Singh (Associate Professor), and Dr. Harsh Kumar (Senior Resident).
