Punjab Women’s Commission Issues Notice to Congress Leader Sukhpal Khaira Over Remarks
The Punjab State Women’s Commission has taken notice of a video involving Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira, in which he criticized the Punjab government’s scheme providing ₹1,000 monthly financial assistance to women.
The controversy began after a video surfaced showing some women celebrating the announcement of the scheme by the Aam Aadmi Party government. Reacting to the video on social media, Khaira wrote, “How can we expect ‘brave sons’ to be born from women who celebrate just for ₹1,000 by dancing giddha?” The comment sparked criticism from several quarters.
In connection with the matter, Bhulath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring have been directed to appear before the commission at 11:30 a.m. on March 12. The notice states that Khaira allegedly made the remarks with the encouragement of the state Congress chief.
The commission has also asked the Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to conduct an investigation through an officer of SP rank and submit a report.
During the ongoing Punjab Assembly session, women MLAs from the Aam Aadmi Party strongly criticized Khaira’s remarks. Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema accused the Congress of being anti-Dalit and anti-women, alleging that Congress leaders frequently use disrespectful language.
