Australian ‘Mushroom Murderer’ Erin Patterson Appeals Life Sentence Over Alleged Jury Irregularities
Erin Patterson, 52, who was sentenced to life in prison for killing three
of her estranged husband’s relatives with death cap mushrooms, has
filed an appeal to overturn her conviction. Patterson argues that
“fundamental irregularities” during the jury’s deliberations — including
jurors staying in the same hotel as police and prosecutors —
undermined the fairness of the verdict.
Her seven-point appeal also claims that certain evidence, including
cell tower data and Facebook messages, was “unfairly prejudicial,”
and that the prosecution’s questioning and final arguments caused a
“miscarriage of justice.” She further alleges the trial judge wrongly
excluded photos and videos of mushrooms found at her home.
Convicted of murdering Gail and Donald Patterson and Heather
Wilkinson, and attempting to kill Ian Wilkinson, Patterson was accused
of luring them to a 2023 lunch where she served poisoned beef
Wellington. Her case gripped Australia and drew international
attention for its bizarre and tragic details. Pic courtesy: Wikimedia
