Pokrovsk on the Brink: Russia Edges Closer to Major Breakthrough in Eastern Ukraine
Ukraine is fiercely battling to hold the key eastern city of Pokrovsk,
which faces an intense Russian offensive after months of fighting.
The fall of this strategic transport hub in the Donetsk region would
mark Moscow’s biggest gain in months and move President Vladimir
Putin closer to his goal of seizing the entire Donbas region.
Despite Kyiv’s claims of “active resistance,” Russian troops have
infiltrated parts of the city, overwhelming some Ukrainian units. Both
sides issue conflicting reports, with Ukraine denying encirclement and
Russia claiming progress. Analysts say the situation remains fluid,
with “most of Pokrovsk” now a contested no-man’s land.
Pokrovsk’s loss would not only weaken Ukraine’s eastern defences but
also hurt morale as winter looms. Strategically, it could open routes
deeper into central Ukraine and bolster Moscow’s leverage in potential
peace talks, especially amid renewed U.S. efforts to end the war. Pic
