Cameroon’s 92-Year-Old Biya Sworn In for Eighth Term Amid Deadly Post-Election Unrest
Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, 92, has taken oath for an eighth
consecutive term, vowing to restore order after violent protests
following disputed election results. In his inaugural speech, Biya
blamed “irresponsible politicians” for the unrest that left at least 14
people dead and over 1,200 arrested.
Biya secured 54% of the vote against rival Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s 35%,
though Bakary claims victory and accuses the government of fraud.
Judges dismissed all eight complaints citing lack of evidence, while
parts of the country were paralyzed by strikes called by Bakary.
In his address, Biya praised security forces for controlling the protests
and promised to prioritize youth, women, and anti-corruption efforts.
Critics, however, accuse him of authoritarian rule since taking power in
