Zohran Mamdani Becomes New York’s First Muslim and Youngest Mayor in a Century
Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, has been elected
as New York City’s new mayor, defeating former governor Andrew
Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani made history as the
city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, and the youngest in more
than 100 years. He promised to make New York a city that works for
the common people and stand strong against the Trump
administration.
The Uganda-born leader, who grew up in New York and became a U.S.
citizen in 2018, ran a campaign focused on affordability, public
transport, and social justice. His win is seen as a big boost for
progressives in the Democratic Party, as millions of New Yorkers
voted in record numbers.
Mamdani has pledged free child care, free city buses, and city-run
grocery stores, though critics question how he will fund them. He also
aims to reform policing by including mental health workers in
emergency calls. As he prepares to take office on January 1, all eyes
are on how he turns his bold promises into action. Pic courtesy:
