NATO declares Russia a threat to its members’ peace and security

NATO has declared Russia the “most significant and direct threat” to its members’ peace and security.

At a summit in Madrid, Canada has also announced it will considerably beef up its troops in Latvia.

NATO itself vows to strengthen support for Ukraine, even as that country’s leader chided the alliance for not doing more to help it
defeat Moscow.

Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly will not say how many more troops will be added in Latvia to the two thousand already there.

The war in Ukraine has pushed the alliance to pour troops and weapons into eastern Europe on a scale not seen since the Cold War.
