Chandigarh: A Patiala court on Thursday awarded 10-year jail term to 22 accused in the Nabha jailbreak case. These include nine dreaded gangsters and two jail staffers. Six accused have been acquitted in the case.

The acquitted accused are Mohammad Aseem, Naresh Narang, Tejinder Sharma, Jatinder Singh alias Tony, Varinder Singh alias Rikki Sahota and Ranjit Singh. All of them were accused of conspiring in the jail break case, providing weapons to jail break offenders, helping them with money and later giving them shelter. But due to lack of evidence, the court acquitted all of them.

Of the 22 convicted by the court, nine dreaded gangsters Gurpreet Singh Sekhon, Amandeep Singh alias Dhotian, Sulakhan Singh alias Babbar, Manvir Singh alias Mani Sekhon, Kulpreet Singh alias Neeta Deol, Gurpreet Singh Khoura, Bikar Singh, Palwinder Singh and Jagatveer Singh alias Jagta are among the 22 convicts.

The convicts are Gurpreet, Gurjit Singh alias Lada, Harjot Singh alias Jot, Kulwinder Singh alias Dhimbari, Rajwinder Singh alias Raju Sultan, Ravinder Singh alias Giana, Sukhchain Singh alias Sukhi, Manjinder Singh, Aman Kumar, Sunil Kalra, Kiran Pal Singh alias Kirana, jail staff Bhim Singh and Jagmeet Singh.

According to the information, the jail employees were also accused of unlawful activities prevention act (UAPA) and corruption, but this could not be proved in the court and the court found these two jail accused guilty of dereliction of duty.

On the other hand, Manjinder Singh, Aman Kumar, Sunil Kalra and Kiran Pal Singh have been found guilty of providing shelter to the accused. The rest have been convicted under sections of attempt to murder, obstructing official duty, dacoity.

The whole incident

On November 27, 2016, criminals in police uniforms opened indiscriminate fire at the Maximum Security Jail in Nabha and freed four dreaded gangsters, including Khalistan Liberation Force chief Harminder Singh Mintoo and terrorist Kashmir Singh, from jail.
