New Delhi: At least 54 people have lost their lives due to violence in Manipur till Saturday. Of the 54 dead, 16 have been kept in the mortuary of the Churachandpur district hospital, while 15 bodies are at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal East, officials said.

In addition, the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Lamphel in Imphal West confirmed the death of 23 people. Around 10,000 troops of the Army and Assam Rifles have been deployed in the state to control the situation.

Several people have been killed in violent clashes between the two communities, sources were quoted as saying. At the same time, more than 100 people are reported to be injured. However, the police were not ready to confirm it. The bodies were brought from districts like Imphal East and West, Churachandpur and Bishenpur.

Similarly, many people injured by bullets are also being treated at RIMS and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences. More columns of the Army, Rapid Action Force and central police forces have been rushed to Manipur to control the violence.

The death toll in the Manipur massacre has risen to 54, officials said. Unofficial sources, however, put the figure in multiple digits.

Meanwhile, life returned to normal in the Imphal Valley on Saturday with shops and markets reopening and cars plying on the roads. The security presence, strengthened by the flying of more army columns, rapid action forces, and central police forces, was clearly visible in all major areas and roads.
