Chandigarh: The Punjab police have arrested the mother-in-law of the deceased youngster Lovepreet Singh after 14 months in connection with his suicide case.

Arrested woman has been identified as Sukhwinder Kaur, a resident of Kothe Gobindpura village. On June 23, 2021, Lovepreet Singh committed suicide by consuming pesticide in his field.

His family later alleged that Lovepreet committed suicide after being fed up from his wife Beant Kaur, who snapped ties with him after going to Canada on student visa.

Lovepreet Singh and Beant Kaur of Khuddi Kalan village got married on August 2, 2019. Beant was sent to Canada by the in-laws after spending about Rs 25 lakh. She had promised to invite her husband but after going to Canada, Beant Kaur stopped talking to Lovepreet. Due to this, Lovepreet Singh was mentally disturbed, her family had alleged.

Had to struggle to get an FIR registered

After the suicide of Lovepreet Singh, the family had gone pillar to post to register an FIR against the alleged accused.

Manisha Gulati, chairperson of the Women’s Commission, also reached his house to get justice for the family. It was only after Gulati’s intervention and pressure a case was registered against Beant Kaur, NRI wife of deceased Lovepreet.

Police said that they had registered a case against Beant Kaur on June 29. After a year-long investigation, the mother-in-law was found accused in the case and she was arrested by the Dhanaula police.

The police had formed a special investigation team

Inspector Lakhwinder Singh, in-charge of Dhanaula police station, said that the investigation of the suicide case went on continuously. The police investigated the whole case thoroughly and in the investigation, Sukhwinder Kaur, mother of Beant Kaur living in Canada, was found accused. The police have registered a case and arrested her. She will now be produced in court. Further action will be taken as per rules, he said.
