Chandigarh: Police on Tuesday lathi-charged teachers, professors and librarians who were going to gherao the residence of Higher Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer in Punjab’s Barnala. There was a lot of commotion here as protesters were adamant to hold protest. Later, the police forcibly took away the protesters in buses and locked them in various police stations.

It has been reported that teachers, professors and librarians were camping in Barnala since Monday demanding a permanent job. On Tuesday morning, they marched towards the residence of Higher Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer. The police were already on alert. The police stopped them on the way. When the protesters were adamant on going ahead, the police lathi-charged them.

Ruthlessly thrashed by police

The police took off the turbans of the teachers with lathi charge and also thrashed women teachers and librarians mercilessly. During the cane charge, disabled teachers also became victims of police assault. Many police personnel also fell on the ground in the lathi charge.

Slogans against the AAP minister

Despite the police lathi-charge, the protesters continued to raise slogans against the state’s AAP government and Higher Education Minister Gurmeet Singh. In the end, protesters were taken in police buses to different police stations and locked up.
