Mumbai: An 18-year-old student of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) died after falling from the seventh floor of the institute’s hostel in Powai.
According to the report, the student was from Ahmedabad in Gujarat and was studying first year of chemical engineering at IIT. Police said that the student had fallen from the seventh floor at 11:30 am on Sunday. Police have not found any suicide note from the spot.
Meanwhile, some students have alleged that a Scheduled Caste student was allegedly being discriminated against on campus. With this, he took the step of suicide. At present, the police have registered a case of accidental death. The matter is being investigated.
Darshan Solanki, a BTech student, hailed from Ahmedabad, police said. He enrolled in the course three months ago. His first semester exams ended on Saturday. Powai police are trying to find out if the student took such a big step under pressure from studies.
APPSC (Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle) IIT Bombay tweeted: “We mourn the demise of Darshan Solanki, an 18-year-old Dalit student. He enrolled at IIT Bombay for his BTech 3 months ago. We must understand that this is not a personal or private issue, but an institutional murder.”
Another tweet said, “Despite our complaints, the institute did not care to make the campus inclusive and safe for Dalit Bahujan tribal students.”
