New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party’s Gujarat president Gopal Italia has been released by the Delhi Police after being detained for about three hours on Thursday.

Gopal Italia was lodged at Okhla police station in south-east district. He was detained from the National Commission of Women’s Delhi office today for allegedly using derogatory language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a viral video.

On the summons of the National Commission for Women, Italia had reached the commission’s office, from where the police had taken him into custody.

Commenting on Italia’s detention, Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia has said that those who are arresting Gopal Italia do not know how to run a school. Not able to fix the school even in 27 years, Gopal Italia comes from the party which is making schools better.

Italia who came into the limelight due to his controversial statements, had earlier alleged that the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women was threatening to put him in jail.

“The National Commission for Women Chief is threatening to put me in jail. What can the Modi government do except putting the Patel community in the jail? BJP hates the Patidar community. I am a descendant of Sardar Patel. Not afraid of your jails. Put me in jail. They have also called the police. They are threatening me,” he said in a tweet before his arrest.

Reacting to Italia’s tweet, AAP convener and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal wrote, “Why is the entire BJP after Gopal Italia.”

National Commission for Women President Rekha Sharma said, “She had summoned Italia but he came with several AAP workers. They tried to enter by pushing the gate of our office, Later we called the police and informed them about it.”

Recently, BJP had tweeted a video of Gopal Italia, in which he was seen using abusive words against the PM. Later, NCW summoned him to appear on October 13.
