Washington: US President Joe Biden described the elevation of Indian-origin British MP Rishi Sunak as the new Prime Minister of Britain as as “ground-breaking milestone”. Speaking at the White House Diwali celebrations on Monday, President Biden said that the festival of lights is a reminder that each one of us has the ability to remove darkness and spread light in the world.

“It’s an option and we make this choice every day,” Biden said enthusiastically among more than 200 people with select guests and Indian-American members of the administration. This is true in our lives and the lives of our nation, especially in the life of democracy, whether it is here in the US or in India that families are completing 75 years of independence and whether it is the United Kingdom, where today we have got the news that Rishi Sunak is now the Prime Minister.

“Sunak is set to become prime minister, I think tomorrow when he visits the king, it’s amazing, an unprecedented milestone and it matters, it matters,” Biden said, acknowledging the achievements of the NRI community.

Biden made history in 2020 by inducting Indian-origin Kamala Harris into his government. Kamala Harris is the Vice President of the United States and the second most powerful person in the country after Biden to be elected to this post.
