New Delhi: Gangster Deepak ‘Boxer’, one of India’s most wanted fugitives, was brought to the national capital by the Delhi Police on Wednesday morning. He was arrested by police officers in Mexico.
A two-member team of Delhi Police’s Special Cell carrying Deepak reached Terminal 3 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport at 6 am. The team arrived here from Mexico via Istanbul in Turkey.
Deepak will be questioned in connection with his criminal activities and his alleged involvement in the murder of a builder in north Delhi’s Civil Lines area, police said.
The gangster, who won a national-level boxing championship, was trying to enter the US illegally from Mexico to run his own gang of organised crime in Delhi and its neighbouring states, a senior police officer said.
Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) H.G.S. Dhaliwal said that the gangster took several routes to reach Mexico, but with the help of the US Embassy in Delhi, he fell into the trap of the police. This is for the first time that the Delhi Police has arrested a gangster during an operation outside the country, he said.
The police had announced a reward of Rs 3 lakh for information that helped police to arrest him. He was running the ‘Gogi Gang’ which allegedly had links with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
“We received information in January that Deepak had made a fake passport in the name of Ravi Antil, a resident of Bareilly, to flee the country.” He boarded a flight from Kolkata to Dubai.
He then travelled from Dubai to Almaty in Kazakhstan and reached Turkey. He then left for Spain. After taking different routes, he finally reached Mexico. “Our team was constantly tracking him down,” Dhaliwali said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Police said his arrest was the result of coordinated efforts of the Crime Branch and the Special Cell. He said the gangster was wanted in India in 10 sensational cases, including murder and extortion, in the last five years.
Deepak was running the ‘Gogi Gang’ after the murder of gangster Jatinder Mann alias Gogi in Delhi’s Rohini court complex. Gogi was shot dead by two assailants on September 24, 2021. Deepak is a resident of Ganaur in Haryana’s Sonipat district.
