New Delhi: A Gandhinagar sessions court on Tuesday sentenced Asaram Bapu to life imprisonment for raping a woman disciple.

The court on Monday convicted Asaram Bapu for raping a woman disciple. The case against Asaram was registered in 2013. The court had acquitted six other accused, including Asaram’s wife, due to lack of evidence.

According to the FIR lodged at Chandkheda police station in Ahmedabad, Asaram had raped the woman several times between 2001 and 2006 when she lived at his ashram on the outskirts of the city.

In October 2013, a Surat-based woman had filed a case against Asaram and seven others, accusing them of rape and illegal confinement. One of the accused died while the trial was pending.

A charge sheet was filed in the case in July 2014. Asaram Bapu is currently lodged in Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan in another rape case.

The victim’s younger sister was raped by Asaram’s son Narayan Sai and kept in illegal confinement.

Sai was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Sessions Court in Surat in April 2019 in a rape case lodged against him in 2013.
