Ontario: The Ontario government has formally filed an appeal against the court’s decision to dismiss Bill 124. The controversial bill had a provision to put a ban on the salaries of public sector employees after increasing their salary by one per cent.
The bill was first introduced in 2019 and was implemented for the next three years.
Several groups representing public sector workers took the government to court, saying bill 124 was unconstitutional. On November 29, Justice Markus Koehnen delivered his decision that the bill was unconstitutional and violated the applicants’ right to establish an association and joint bargaining.
After this judgment, the Ford government had indicated that it would appeal against it. A spokesman for the Attorney General confirmed on Thursday that an appeal in this regard has been formally made.
