Chandigarh: A doctor posted in Punjab’s Amritsar jail has been arrested while smuggling drugs into the jail.
The doctor was giving drugs to prisoners in the jail instead of medicines. When the information was received by the jail administration, they laid a trap and caught the doctor red-handed, officials said.
The jail administration has recovered the drugs from the doctor. On the complaint of the jail administration, the police have registered a case against the doctor.
On behalf of the Health Department, Dr Davinder Singh was posted as a medical officer in the jail. Inside the jail, this doctor used to give medicines to the prisoners and lock-ups who fell ill, but under the guise of this, he also started the work of delivering drugs to the prisoners, a jail official said.
The jail administration received information that the doctor was delivering drugs to the inmates. After which the jail administration laid a trap. The jail assistant superintendent arrested Dr Davinder after he handed over two packets od drugs containing
100 grams of heroin from two inmates.
He was also extorting huge money from the prisoners for smuggling drugs.
Jail Minister Harjot Singh Bains said, “In a Special under cover operation we have red handedly caught Jail Medical Officer posted at Amritsar Jail Dr. Davinder Singh delivering two packets of 194 Gm White Narcotic Powder (seems to be heroine) to two inmates. FIR Lodged & Accused handed over to STF.”
