Chandigarh: Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and questioned his silence on the Adani issue, calling him “Mauni Baba”.
In response to Kharge’s remarks, Rajya Sabha Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar said such remarks “do not suit his stature”.
Kharge was replying to the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha. “I want to ask the PM why are you so calm? You scare every other person, why are you not scaring industrialists?”
“People spreading hatred, if the PM raises an eye at them, they will sit thinking that they will not get a ticket this time. But today he has chosen to remain silent. He has become Mauni Baba.”
Kharge was demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the Adani case in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Dhankar said, “It doesn’t suit your stature. Frankly, there are certain positions for which we have to pay a lot of respect. Similarly, you cannot behave like this in the institutions. You are a senior member. If anyone in the House uses the LoP, I will come to the rescue of the LoP.”
“It is a high constitutional post. I had hoped that you would raise the level of debate.”
Both ‘Zero Hour’ and ‘Question Hour’ were adjourned in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday to start a debate on the ‘Motion of Thanks on the President’s address’.
