Chandigarh: The Congress has decided to field Karamjit Kaur, wife of its late MP Santokh Chaudhary, in the by-election to Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat in Punjab. Karamjit Kaur’s candidature was announced on Monday.
Chaudhary died of a sudden heart attack on January 14 this year during Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra.
According to the rules, the by-election to the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, which fell vacant after the death of Santokh Chaudhary, is necessary to be held within six months.
The six-month period ends in July. Even before that, the Congress has played an emotional card by fielding Santokh Chaudhary’s wife Karamjit Kaur in the election.
According to the information received, the Congress high command had called Santokh Chaudhary’s wife Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary to New Delhi on Monday morning. Since then, there was speculation that the Congress party could make her a candidate in the by-election. Her name was announced on Monday afternoon.
The letter related to the candidature of Karamjit Kaur was released by Mukul Wasnik, General Secretary of the Central Election Committee (CEC) of the Congress party.
Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge has decided to nominate Karamjit Kaur as the party’s candidate for the by-election to jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, the letter said.
