Ottawa: Liberal leadership contender Chrystia Freeland has unveiled plans to alleviate the cost of living in Canada. She commits to removing income tax for millions- under this plan, couples can save nearly $1100 in the year. Along expecting to reduce grocery prices by capping profits for essentials like milk, eggs, and vegetables, the policy aims to prohibit “shrinkflation”, or anything giving raises while keeping prices the same but lowering sizes.
She also plans to abolish GST on newly constructed houses valued up to $1.5 million for first buyers and put a cap of 15 percent on credit card interest, targeting ultimately a maximum of 10. Besides these, she announced the establishment of 100,000 more daycare spaces in federal buildings each costing $10 a day.
Some other candidates for the post, including Mark Carney and Karina Gould, proposed tax cuts and affordability plans as expectedly. The NDP condemned her for rejecting the same grocery price cap for the last year, branding her promises as election gimmicks.
