Paris: Christa Deguchi won Canada’s first gold medal at the Paris Olympics in the under-57 kilogram judo event. She defeated South Korea’s Mimi Huh in the final after Huh received a third penalty in sudden-death overtime. This victory was a comeback for Deguchi, who had lost to Huh in the 2024 world championships.

Deguchi, a two-time world champion, is Canada’s first Olympic judo gold medalist. She reached the final by beating Sarah-Léonie Cysique of France, who later won bronze by defeating Georgia’s Eteri Liparteliani.
