Chandigarh: In a bid to boost the sale of electric vehicles in Chandigarh, registration of two-wheelers running on petrol has been stopped by the UT administration.
Under the electric policy issued by the administration, capping was imposed on the registration of two-wheelers running on petrol for the next five years.
The registration of petrol-run vehicles for the current financial year has been completed under capping. Therefore, it has been decided to immediately stop the registration of non-electric two-wheelers to implement the electric policy.
Under the policy, non-electric (petrol-powered) two-wheelers sold on or after February 10, 2023 will not be registered in the current financial year i.e. till March 31.
Registration for two-wheelers running on petrol will resume from April 1, 2023, and will be done as per the limits set for the current financial year 2023-24.
In the registration for the first year, the target was to reduce four-wheelers by 10 per cent and two-wheelers by 35 per cent.
Under the policy, all vehicles of the administration and municipal corporation will also be converted into electric vehicles. Apart from this, the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) will purchase electronic buses and old buses also be replaced with electric buses.
The department has already started working on it. A total of 80 electric buses have reached the department, while the department is working on procuring 80 more electric buses, officials said.
