Chandigarh: The CBI has initiated a probe against former Chandigarh SSP and Jalandhar Commissioner of Police (CP) Kuldeep Singh Chahal on corruption charges.

A preliminary enquiry has been initiated into the matter. This investigation has been started on charges of corruption and misconduct during his tenure as SSP in Chandigarh.

Chahal was removed 10 months before the completion of his three-year term in Chandigarh. His alleged misconduct was cited as the reason behind this and Chandigarh Administrator BL Purohit had issued orders to release him on December 12 with immediate effect.

According to the sources, the investigation has been started on the basis of information given by Punjab Governor and Chandigarh administrator BL Purohit. Chahal, a 2009 batch IPS officer, took charge as SSP Chandigarh on September 29, 2020. Prior to this, he was SSP Mohali.

Removed on complaint of misconduct

On December 14, Punjab Governor Purohit had issued a letter to Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, saying there was a complaint of serious misconduct against Chahal, reliable sources said. After which the decision to remove Chahal from the post of SSP of Chandigarh was discussed with the Chief Secretary of Punjab from November 28, 2022. Along with this, a panel of 3 qualified IPS officers was asked to be sent to the SSP of Chandigarh.

According to sources, Chahal’s role was also under lense for not registering an FIR against an influential person in a sexual harassment case. Apart from this, Chahal’s role was also suspicious in the case of illegal possession of a house.
