Chandigarh: The names of former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan have been doing the rounds as his possible successors after Bhagat Singh Koshyari expressed his desire to step down as the Governor of Maharashtra.
Sources said nothing can be said for sure at the moment as the top leadership is considering several names for the post.
Sources, however, admitted that given the age and political experience of Singh and Mahajan, they are eligible for the post.
Captain Amarinder Singh, who quit the Congress in 2021 after being unceremoniously removed from the post of chief minister, floated the Punjab Lok Congress Party, which later merged with the BJP. The BJP has recently appointed Captain as a member of its national executive.
