Ottawa: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is optimistic about working with U.S. president-elect Donald Trump, despite potential trade conflicts. Trudeau believes Canada can align with U.S. trade policies, particularly on Chinese trade practices, as shown by Canada’s recent EV tariffs on Chinese imports. Tensions may arise over Mexico’s role in the trade pact, with Trump and Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticizing Mexico’s facilitation of Chinese goods entering North America. Trudeau remains ready to push back on U.S. tariffs if they arise and plans to defend Canada’s supply management for dairy and poultry, which could become a contentious issue under Trump. Trade experts warn that even the threat of tariffs could harm Canadian investment and jobs.
