British Columbia: B.C. Ombudsperson Jay Chalke revealed that over the past decade, dozens of temporary public service jobs meant for career development went to government appointees instead. His investigation found that 64 jobs were wrongly given to appointees, bypassing regular public servants. This systemic issue occurred despite policies against such practices. The investigation started after a tip about hiring at the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, though no issues were found there. Chalke’s report highlights how the B.C. Public Service Agency allowed 205 appointees to apply for these temporary positions from 2013 to 2023, violating existing rules.
