BC: Although B.C.’s wildfire season this year is less severe than last year’s record-breaking events, Emergency Minister Bowinn Ma warns that persistent drought conditions could exacerbate the situation. The province has spent $483 million on wildfire suppression this year, slightly less than last year’s $556 million. Currently, over 350 wildfires are active, with 18 properties evacuated and 1,600 on alert. Two fires are classified as “wildfires of note,” while 29% of fires are burning out of control. Despite recent rains providing some relief, a quarter of the province remains at drought level four or five, with severe economic and environmental impacts. Resource Minister Nathan Cullen emphasizes the ongoing need for water conservation and vigilance.
