British Columbia: In the first six months of 2024, British Columbia saw 1,158 drug-related deaths, a 9% decrease from last year. May and June each recorded around 180 deaths, keeping the average at six deaths per day. Drug toxicity, primarily due to fentanyl, remains the top cause of death for people aged 10 to 59 in B.C., surpassing accidents, suicides, and other causes. Men and boys make up 72% of these deaths, with a rising trend among women. B.C.’s mental health minister noted this is the lowest rate in four years but stressed more work is needed to address the crisis.
