To coincide with the federal government removing the federal carbon tax on consumers, the B.C. government is tabling legislation on Monday, March 31, 2025, which would remove the provincial carbon tax effective April 1, 2025.

The Province is immediately notifying fuel sellers and natural gas retailers so that they can take action to stop collecting the tax from consumers as of April 1, 2025. The Province expects fuel sellers and natural gas retailers to make every effort to ensure their customers are not charged the carbon tax on purchases as of April 1.

The B.C. government simultaneously reaffirmed its commitment to combat climate change by encouraging industry to innovate in order to supply consumers with affordable options in order to make sustainable choices.

The B.C. government stated incentivizing industry to adopt lower-carbon technologies while maintaining their competitiveness is critically important. The province reaffirms that big industrial emitters will continue to pay their ‘fair share’ through the output-based carbon pricing system, which hopes to encourage emitters to invest in cost-effective ways to cut emissions.
