Ottawa: In spite of conflicting reports that had indicated the imposition of tariffs could be postponed until March 1, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the February 1 deadline for President Donald Trump’s tariff decree on Mexico, Canada, and China. The tariffs are slated for 25% taxation against Mexico and Canada, and 10% on China based on concerns arising from fentanyl trafficking. There have been talks about possible exemptions, but Leavitt remained tight-lipped regarding details on that front. If given obligation, the tariffs would result in escalating the trade conflict, which could have serious consequences for the annual $1 trillion Canada-U.S. trade. Prime Minister Trudeau has said he would hit back with targeted tariffs, and experts have warned that it would make a severe dent on the economy and cause job losses on both sides.
