Ottawa: Reacting to President Donald Trump’s inauguration, PM Justin Trudeau lauded strong economic ties between Canada and the US. He said the two nations enjoyed mutual benefits but had reserved to stating national interests.
This follows reports suggesting Trump would initially have no direct tariffs imposed on Canada, despite prior threats. Instead, he plans to look into trade imbalances among countries including Canada. It is ready to have retaliatory tariffs imposed on goods from the U.S. when necessary, with a plan in the pipeline to respond to a $37 billion cost.
Trudeau and company are ready for any likelihood, and meanwhile, there’s a cabinet meeting within the federal government on the same subject. This makes it interesting because Trudeau’s leadership is under the microscope while the Liberal Party is in the leadership race to find the replacement for him.
