British Columbia: A break in the summer weather has helped B.C. wildfire crews manage some of the fires. However, with warmer and drier conditions expected soon, the BC Wildfire Service is staying alert. Warmer weather can make fire fuels more flammable, especially if combined with wind.
As of Wednesday, there are over 335 active wildfires in B.C., including six significant ones. The central Interior and Southeast regions are experiencing more activity due to less rainfall compared to other parts of the province.
So far this year, there have been about 1,000 fire starts, fewer than last year’s 1,500. Despite a similar number of active fires, the total area burned is lower than last year. The BC Wildfire Service is shifting resources to areas with high fire activity and advises people to remain cautious as conditions can change quickly.
