India : A stampede at a religious gathering in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, led to at least 116 deaths and over 80 injuries. The panic erupted in a makeshift tent following an event with Hindu figure Bhole Baba, possibly due to heat and suffocation. Overcrowding was a likely factor, as 15,000 attendees far exceeded the 5,000 limit. Bodies, mostly of women and children, filled local hospital grounds, with relatives mourning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and state officials have pledged support and launched an investigation into the tragedy. Deadly stampedes are a recurring issue at India’s crowded religious events.
