British Columbia: B-C’s human rights commissioner has launched an inquiry into police use of force against racialized people and individuals experiencing mental health challenges, although she says there may be gaps in the data they’re working worth.
Kasari Govender (kah-SAR’-ee GUV’-en-der) says police departments are required to submit reports on officers’ use of force to the B-C government, and her office has received a batch of the data it requested from the Ministry of Public Safety.
But she says the reports do not include requirements to provide race-based data, making it difficult for her team to draw conclusions about potential inequities.
Govender says she expects her office would make a recommendation to address gaps in race-based data if that’s what the inquiry finds.
