US: A citizen of India has been charged in the United States with plotting to assassinate a Sikh separatist leader living in New York.
The U-S attorney general says Nikhil Gupta plotted to pay an assassin 100-thousand-dollars to kill a prominent Sikh separatist leader.
Earlier today, India set up a high-level inquiry after concerns were raised that its government may have had knowledge of a plot to kill a Sikh separatist leader on American soil.
In September, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had said there were credible allegations that the Indian government may have had links to the assassination of a Sikh activist in B-C.
India called the accusation absurd and both countries expelled their top diplomats. India has opened an investigation after the United States raised concerns it disrupted a plot to kill a Sikh separatist leader on American soil.
The U-S government has not commented on how or when it became aware of the plot to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun– who is
considered a terrorist by the Indian government.
While it is not clear how the alleged assassination attempt was derailed, a foreign ministry spokesman for India says the information is being taken seriously.
