Ottawa: Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne says the country’s top five grocery chains have agreed to take concrete action to stabilize food prices.

He says shoppers will soon start to see discounts, price-freezes and price-matching campaigns.

Champagne says these measures will create a more competitive marketplace, which will bring benefits to Canadians.

The minister says the measures he secured with the country’s largest grocers are only the first steps toward stabilizing prices.

Rising prices at grocery stores have been a major stressor for Canadians and tend to disproportionately affect lower-income families. — The Canadian Press
