Victoria: Talks are underway between the Ministry of Health and the body that regulates physicians and surgeons in B-C.

A statement from the ministry says the discussions are focused on bylaw changes that will allow physician assistants to work in emergency departments across B-C.

Physician assistants work under a doctor’s direction and can provide a broad range of services – from patient exams, to ordering lab and diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, managing treatment plans, and giving advice on preventive and other health practices.

Dr. Heidi Oetter with the College of Physicians and Surgeons says physician assistants in emergency departments will improve access to care and the college is pleased to be asked to licence and regulate them. — The Canadian Press
