Chandigarh: Gurmeet Singh, accused in the assassination case of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, was today granted bail by a Chandigarh court. The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Amaninder Singh Sandhu asked him to furnish surety of Rs 2 lakh each.
Advocates Jaspal Singh Manjpur and Dilsher Singh Jandiala had filed bail applications for the accused in view of the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Earlier, another accused Lakhwinder Singh alias Lakha was released on bail from Chandigarh’s Burail jail in May. Gurmeet has been behind bars for 27 years. Gurmeet, who is currently lodged in Chandigarh’s Burail jail, sought his release on the ground that he has completed 27 years in jail.
He argued that he should not be discriminated against as several other life convicts were released on completion of the 14-year sentence.
