Cape Town: 10 countries account for 60 per cent of the world’s deaths, including childbirths, stillbirths and infant deaths, revealed a report released by the United Nations.

The report also said that India also tops the list of 10 countries that contribute 51 per cent of global child births.

According to these figures, in 2020-2021, 2.90 lakh women died during childbirth, 19 lakh dead children were born and 23 lakh newborns died.

There have been a total of 4.5 million deaths globally, of which 7,88,000 are in India. India is followed by Nigeria, Pakistan, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and China.

According to a World Health Organisation report, an estimated 13.4 million babies were born too early in 2020. That is more than 1 in 10 babies.

Approximately 900000 children die in 2019 of complications of preterm birth (1). Many survivors face a lifetime of disability, including learning disabilities and visual and hearing problems, the report added.
